In this regard, DoT has asked TRAI to review mobile apps and their internet calling/messaging features.

But there is a discussion that many mobile apps like Skype, WhatsApp, Signal Google Meet, Facebook Messenger, Telegram can charge for internet calling and messaging. Telecom companies demanded from the government

In fact, telecom companies have demanded from the government that 'same rules for similar facilities' should be fixed. This means that internet based calls and messages should also come under the ambit. License fee should be charged from them like telecom companies. At the same time, responsibility should be fixed for following the rules of legal interception, improving services. Telecom companies said under 'One Service, One Charge' that, 'These apps should also be seen like telecom companies and Internet Service Provider (ISP).'


DoT seeks suggestions from TRAI

At the same time, in view of all these demands, DoT has sought suggestions from TRAI. DoT said that while seeking suggestions from TRAI, can Internet calling and messaging from these apps be brought under the legal framework? In this regard, DoT has asked to review the 2008 recommendations on Internet Based Telephony.
