Smartphone sales in India fell by 27 percent to 29.6 million units in the fourth quarter (October-December) of 2022. Let us tell that in the fourth quarter of the year 2021, a total of 4.06 crore smartphones were sold across the country. Market research company IDC said in a report on Friday that this major decline recorded in smartphone sales in India is mainly due to inflationary pressure. According to the report, despite improvements in the supply system, falling consumer demand due to high inflation remained a major challenge throughout the year.

Tremendous jump in sales of expensive mobile phones

It was told in the report that in the year 2022, the sale of smartphones in the range of about Rs 25,000 ($ 300) fell by 15 percent. However, an increase of 20 percent has been registered in the sales of smartphones in the range of 25 thousand to 41 thousand rupees ($ 300-500) and 55 percent increase in the sales of smartphones in the range of more than 41 thousand rupees. The share of entry-level smartphones priced below Rs 12500 in the mobile phone market has come down from 54 per cent in the year 2021 to 46 per cent in the year 2022.

The problem will remain in the year 2023 as well

Upasana Joshi, research manager for consumer devices at IDC India, said the lack of new mobile devices in the Rs 12,000 ($150) range has held back growth in the category. According to Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President, Equipment Research, IDC, rising prices and storage will continue to be a problem in the first half of the current year.

A total of 201 million mobile phones were sold in the year 2022, registering an annual decline of 12 percent. Xiaomi remained on top with a market share of 18.6 percent and 38.3 percent on quarterly and annual basis respectively. Although the company's sales decreased by 38.3 percent in the December 2022 quarter and 25 percent on an annual basis.
