In today's time, most people use WhatsApp. Talking about India alone, the number of its users here is more than 400 million. In addition to messaging, in WhatsApp, you also get the facility of calling and video calls. But now WhatsApp users may have to worry about this. The government has prepared the draft of the Indian Telecommunication Bill, 2022. Since the draft of the new telecom bill, it is being speculated that you may have to pay money to use WhatsApp in the coming times.

These apps including WhatsApp will have to be licensed

According to the telecom bill, calling and messaging service apps like WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom, Telegram and Google Duo will now have to get a license to operate in India. OTT platforms have also been included in this bill. The draft of the bill is available for all on the website of the Department of Telecom. The department has also sought suggestions from the industry for this bill. If this bill is passed, then the Telecom Department will run according to the rules mentioned in it.

WhatsApp Calling Discontinued

Since the introduction of this new bill, it is being speculated that if a license is needed to operate these apps including WhatsApp, then people may also have to pay fees for WhatsApp calling and other apps. However, if seen, we pay a charge for WhatsApp or any other app anyway. The only difference is that now we pay this charge as data cost. Nothing can be said about how much the companies will or will not charge the users after paying the license fee.

Suggestions have been sought by 20 October

There are many speculations about this as well. It is possible that after taking the license, companies may come up with the option of taking membership for the users or charge a fee or may also provide free service to the users. At present, the government has sought suggestions from the people on the draft of this new bill. These suggestions can be given till October 20. The situation can be clarified only after the bill is passed.

Know the provisions regarding license

The government has added some provisions regarding license fees in this bill. Under this, the government has the right to waive the license fee partially or completely. Apart from this, a provision of refund has also been added to it. In such a situation, if a telecom or internet provider surrenders the license, then he can get a refund. Under the new bill, it will be mandatory for all telecommunication service providers to take a license and follow all the rules. Apart from this, if a telecom company goes bankrupt, then the control of its given spectrum will be with the government.
